DOCX is an XML-based document format used primarily with Microsoft Word. It is the default file type for versions of Word from 2007 onwards, replacing the older DOC format used in earlier versions. It is a zipped, compressed file that contains a collection of XML files, which contain the text, formatting, images, charts and other miscellaneous parts of the document.

The DOCX extension indicates that all files within the archive are encoded in the UTF-8 character set. Because it is open and non-proprietary, some open-source applications have been developed to read and convert DOCX files into other file formats such as PDF. However, true editing of DOCX files requires access to some form of MS Office suite.

DOC is a file extension for documents created by Microsoft Word. It is an application in Microsoft Office suite, and one of the most popular word processing programs for Windows and macOS users. Word DOC files may include text, images, objects, styles, and other formatting. Such files are compatible with versions of Word from 1997 onward, and can be opened in many other word processing programs.

When you create a document in Word, it's saved as a DOC file by default. These files contain different kinds of data stored in a binary format, making them much smaller in size than plain text files. If you wish to share a DOC file with someone who doesn't have Microsoft Office installed, you can save it as a PDF (Portable Document Format).
