DOCX is an XML-based document format used primarily with Microsoft Word. It is the default file type for versions of Word from 2007 onwards, replacing the older DOC format used in earlier versions. It is a zipped, compressed file that contains a collection of XML files, which contain the text, formatting, images, charts and other miscellaneous parts of the document.

The DOCX extension indicates that all files within the archive are encoded in the UTF-8 character set. Because it is open and non-proprietary, some open-source applications have been developed to read and convert DOCX files into other file formats such as PDF. However, true editing of DOCX files requires access to some form of MS Office suite.

RTF (Rich Text Format) files are text documents formatted using special coding. This allows them to retain their appearance (bold, italic, fonts, colors, images, etc.) regardless of the system or software it's viewed on. RTF files can be opened with almost any word processor.

RTF files can be used for activities like preparing user manuals and newsletters. The files can contain text along with some graphics, tables and tabular data. It has become a very popular format due to its ability to retain document formatting and compatibility between different versions of computer and software systems.
