DOCX is an XML-based document format used primarily with Microsoft Word. It is the default file type for versions of Word from 2007 onwards, replacing the older DOC format used in earlier versions. It is a zipped, compressed file that contains a collection of XML files, which contain the text, formatting, images, charts and other miscellaneous parts of the document.

The DOCX extension indicates that all files within the archive are encoded in the UTF-8 character set. Because it is open and non-proprietary, some open-source applications have been developed to read and convert DOCX files into other file formats such as PDF. However, true editing of DOCX files requires access to some form of MS Office suite.

The XLSX file format is a modern extension of the classic XLS file format. It is a Microsoft Excel-sponsored file type designed for storing and exchanging tabular data. An XLSX extension is a collection of multiple binary files stored in an Open Packaging Convention (OPC) container and compressed into one single file.

Due to its compatibility with multiple Office programs and its open XML structure, users can open and edit data stored in an XLSX file easily. Additionally, XLSX files support many features that are not present in the classic XLS file type, such as filters, custom properties, and more robust ways to present data with charts or graphs.
